Identifying Promising Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Diversion Practices

The purpose of this study was to examine state and local efforts to divert TANF applicants from applying for cash assistance. This examination involved gathering information from a range of sources such as state and local TANF offices and national associations. The main objective of this study was to provide state and local TANF offices with information on promising strategies for diverting TANF applicants to employment, or otherwise meeting their need for assistance, and to identify and recommend potential approaches for further study and evaluation of diversion practices.
