Healthy Marriage/Relationship Education - Models and Measures

2013-2015

The purpose of the Healthy Marriage/Relationship Education: Models and Measures project, awarded to Child Trends, is to bring together experts in the field to develop recommendations for “next-generation” marriage/relationship education models for diverse populations. The new models will build on previous implementation and impact evaluation evidence, the experience and views of program operators, and other key sources of information. The project will also involve refining existing measures and measurement methods related to healthy marriage/relationship education, as well as developing and validating alternative measures that better reflect the relationships of diverse couples and the interventions in which they participate.

The project developed recommended measures for assessing the outcomes of healthy marriage and relationship education programs in two populations: adolescents between the ages of 14 and 18, and parents in complex families. In this project, complex families are families where couples are in a committed relationship (married, cohabiting, or in a committed romantic relationship, even if they are not living together), they have at least one child together, and one or both parents have children from previous relationships.

Healthy Marriage and Relationship Education: Recommended Outcome Measures for Parents in Complex Families is a dynamic measures spreadsheet that summarizes the items and measures recommended for healthy marriage and relationship education programs seeking to assess targeted outcome domains related to parents in complex families. There are two versions of the spreadsheet: an Excel workbook version that allows users to sort and organize the data as they wish, and a PDF version that meets federal requirements for accessibility for users with disabilities.

Healthy Marriage and Relationship Education: Considerations for How to Collect Outcomes Data from Parents in Complex Families is a tip sheet with advice on collecting outcomes data from parents in complex families. It also covers issues that could arise when studying this population.

Healthy Marriage and Relationship Education: Recommended Outcome Measures for Adolescents is a dynamic measures spreadsheet that summarizes the items and measures we recommend for healthy marriage and relationship education programs seeking to assess targeted outcome domains related to youth. There are two versions of the spreadsheet: an Excel workbook version that allows users to sort and organize the data as they wish, and a PDF version that meets federal requirements for accessibility for users with disabilities.
