Water, water, everywhere and not a drop to drink…

Water emergencies can come in many forms, and sometimes when there’s an excess of water around you – like the flooding in Texas and Louisiana, or something smaller like a water main breaking in front of your house.

Because you never know when something will happen, it’s important to have an emergency water supply.

Ready.gov recommends having a 3-day supply of a gallon of water, per person, per day. So for a family of four, you should have 12 gallons of water on hand.

The best time to get your water supply ready is now, not when something happens.

A few years ago I went to my local supermarket and saw everyone leaving with their shopping carts packed with bottled water, leaving the shelves inside completely bare. There was a rumor that the town’s water supply had a high level of arsenic in it. It turned out not to be true, but someone looking to get water would have been out of luck that day.

September is National Preparedness Month – learn more about how to get you and your family prepared for an emergency at Ready.gov .
